Description
Banisteriopsis caapi, known commonly as Ayahuasca, is a jungle vine native to Peru, Ecuador and Brazil. It is a plant of significant historical and cultural value. There are two botanically accepted varieties of Banisteriopsis caapi vine: Caupuri, and Tukunaká. Within these groups are found many subspecies, or varieties of Banisteriopsis caapi vine. Tukunaká consists of the popular varieties, including the strains named after colors: black, yellow (cielo), red, white. Although technically classified as the same species, these varieties exhibit significantly different characteristics and have quite a variability as to their constituents. Even skilled botanists can find no distinguishing differences amongst these strains. However, medicine people and Shaman alike can walk through the jungle and easily identify each different strain.

Use*
Banisteriopsis caapi is held in high regard by the indigenous peoples of the regions in which it grows. In these regions, most beings know the spirit of Banisteriopsis as the "master teacher plant". Some believe that the Banisteriopsis caapi vine, has played a significant role influencing the evolution of the human species. There are entire religions formed as a result of the use of this plant and countless shamanic peoples and curanderos who have received knowledge of healing and evolution. This knowledge, they say, is directly communicated to them by the plant. The Ayahuasca vine also teaches the Shaman songs, or icarros. In it's native regions, Ayahausca is used to heal the sick and evolve the spirit through personal connection with the plants. Studies have shown Ayahuasca to have activity (outside of the body) against certain pathogens and microforms. Some believe that the presence and spirit of the Banisteriopsis caapi vine, is enough, in and of itself, to provide the benefit of healing energies.

We offer this cielo Ayahuasca vine for the purpose of creating natural dye. Brewed in water, it can be condensed to yield a vivid yellow color for sacred fabric or garment coloration. This traditional use of the Ayahuasca vine can imbue the dyed fabric with powerful metaphysical properties. So the color will remain steadfast, it must be mixed with a dye fixative or mordant. One natural mordant that has been used by the indigenous people of the USA is Acorus calamus.
